Type and Image
Introduction
In this project I chose a quote (approved by the instructor) that will serve as the foundation of the design in my compositions. Additionally, I explored the relationship between word and image and type as image. There are three different compositions with different emphasis on: image dominant, type only, and type dominant.
Objectives
- Explore relationships between type and image through the juxtaposition and placement studies.
- Utilize image and type treatments to communicate meaning.
- Increase your skills at composition, typographic design, image manipulation and creative problem solving.
Artist Reflection
“This project was a challenge during the sketching phase. I hadn’t thought about the essence of the quote I chose and mainly focus on aesthetic aspects rather than enhancing the message. After some debate, I figured I would either use images relating to cheating or body image. However, I ended up with something of both. The usage of mirrors remained in my composition, but they reflected the inner parts of the couple. It was slightly frustrating hearing people say they couldn’t read my quote. My concept with my text only composition was that you weren’t supposed to read it. Rather you were supposed to see it. A reference to my chosen quote, “Words can lie, see beyond them”. It wasn’t clear enough, so I added some readable text. There was also a problem of the color not showing up on the duotone images, but I believe that was because of the ink and the temperature fluctuating. Overall, this project was fun, but tiring. I worked a lot on the computer and regret not sketching my new ideas down first. Either way, I had to edit the lettering so that they would create depth. I had many subtle details and I hope people take a closer look to see them. ”
